VTGC Promotes a New Landowner Agreement

For two years VMBA has been working with Forests Parks & Recreation (FPR) on a 10-year access agreement. Traditionally, if a trail organization used public funding for a private land project a 10-year easement was required. For many landowners an easement was a deal breaker.

The Trails and Greenways Council collaborated and FPR collaborated on a 10-year access agreement, which eliminates the need for an easement. The agreement was recently approved by the Federal Highway Commission. This is a big deal for trail organizations and users.

The purpose of this advocacy was to strengthen trail organizations relationships with landowners. By asking for an agreement instead of an easement, landowners are more likely to agree to partnering with your local trail group. This is an essential part of ensuring trail diversity across abilities and activity type.

If you are a landowner who is interested in having trails on your land, please reach out to the VTGC for organization contact information.
